Marybeth Peters, Register of Copyrights submitted a statement to Congress regarding the legality of ClearPlay. 

The United States Register of Copy-right makes a statement to the U.S. Congress regarding ClearPlay:

"It is true that the home viewer who uses [ClearPlay] to remove some of the movie's audio and/or visual content is seeing an altered version of the film. Such a version might appear to be an adaptation, or, in copyright parlance, a 'derivative work.' But that is not my reading of the law."

Passed by Con-gress and signed by the President, the Family Movie Act provides for filtering of content "from an author-ized copy of the motion picture."

A Colorado judge rules ClearPlay is compliant with the Family Movie Act, stating:
