Star Trek Beyond

As the USS Enterprise continues its travels through deep space on a five-year assignment, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) is growing restless. However, when the Enterprise is attacked, and Kirk and his crew are left stranded on an uncharted and dangerous planet, the captain must use every resource he can find to save his crew and get back to his original mission.

ClearPlay in Action

There is scattered offensive language in this movie, mostly by Bones (Karl Urban). There are also some violent deaths and injuries that the filters can tone down. Sexual relationships are implied, but not shown and Kirk and his crew drink alcoholic beverages. It’s all very PG-13 in tone, but it’s still more edgy than the original series and Star Trek movies.

So Does this Movie Boldly Go Where No Movie Has Gone Before?

While I am not a Trekkie, I have enjoyed each film in the rebooted series and Star Trek Beyond is no exception. This is a fun movie. It’s directed by Justin Lin (from the Fast & Furious series), so you can expect plenty of action and plenty of ridiculousness, as well as some pandering to the Star Trek fans. This franchise still has some life left in it.

After a brief encounter with an ancient wizard, 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is given the power to transform into the powerful superhero known as Shazam (Zachary Levi). However, the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) wants those powers for himself, and he will stop at nothing until he gets it.

Shazam! is rated PG-13 for innuendo, action violence and scattered language. ClearPlay, however, has been given the power of filtering and can easily thwart the vile content. While there is no explicit nudity, the filters can remove multiple crude jokes as well as some scenes involving an adult club. Unfiltered, the violence could be a little intense for younger viewers, but ClearPlay can skip 15 disturbing moments, as people are harmed and brutally killed by supernatural beings. Plus the filters can eliminate up to 58 potentially offensive words, including 7 S-words and 23 vain references to deity. And, just like magic, this film can be cleaned up easily so the whole family can enjoy it together.

So Does Shazam Have a Spark?

It feels weird to say it, but this is the most enjoyable DC movie I've seen in a long time. This fun family action flick resonated with me because it has heart behind the humor. It does have some flaws, however it's easy to overlook them because it's such an entertaining ride. Shazam seems to capture the spark that many modern superhero movies are missing.
