Star Trek Beyond

As the USS Enterprise continues its travels through deep space on a five-year assignment, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) is growing restless. However, when the Enterprise is attacked, and Kirk and his crew are left stranded on an uncharted and dangerous planet, the captain must use every resource he can find to save his crew and get back to his original mission.

ClearPlay in Action

There is scattered offensive language in this movie, mostly by Bones (Karl Urban). There are also some violent deaths and injuries that the filters can tone down. Sexual relationships are implied, but not shown and Kirk and his crew drink alcoholic beverages. It’s all very PG-13 in tone, but it’s still more edgy than the original series and Star Trek movies.

So Does this Movie Boldly Go Where No Movie Has Gone Before?

While I am not a Trekkie, I have enjoyed each film in the rebooted series and Star Trek Beyond is no exception. This is a fun movie. It’s directed by Justin Lin (from the Fast & Furious series), so you can expect plenty of action and plenty of ridiculousness, as well as some pandering to the Star Trek fans. This franchise still has some life left in it.

The House with a Clock in Its Walls

A newly orphaned boy becomes the ward of an eccentric uncle who lives in a strange house. Together, they search for a clock hidden and ticking inside the walls, set to awaken an evil spell.

ClearPlay in Action!

Almost like magic, ClearPlay can make certain elements of the film disappear. Fourteen violent images such as cuts, blood, and vomiting pumpkins…poof, gone. A lengthy kiss, a sexual comment, and a naked baby crawling...taken away. And although language is mild, up to 33 potentially offensive words can be eliminated.

Parental guidance is recommended since some of the characters frequently insult each other for laughs and parents might not want children to follow suit, and the filtered version still contains frightening and spooky scenes.

Will you find The House with a Clock alarming? …

Jack Black portrays the boy’s uncle and brings humor to the film, as does Cate Blanchett who plays his neighbor. They make the movie entertaining and fun, even for me—a scaredy cat. This is a light-weight horror film geared for kids, but it includes enough representation of evil and dark magic to give some adults (ahem, me) the heebie-jeebies.
